New Road Rules

Mobile phones and visual display units

The risk of you being involved in an accident increases significantly when using a mobile phone or visual display unit.

The Victorian Roads and Traffic Authority has reviewed road rules to ensure drivers are meeting current traffic conditions and to assist them in reaching their destinations as safely as possible.

From November 2009, the following changes to Victoria’s road safety rules will come into effect for drivers using mobile phones and visual display units.

  • Drivers are prohibited from using a mobile phone to make or receive a phone call whilst driving.
  • Exception is only granted if the phone is secured in a commercially designed holder, which is fixed to the vehicle, or can be operated by the driver without touching any part of the phone.
  • Holding a mobile phone whether or not engaged in a phone call is also prohibited.
  • Holding includes resting the mobile on the drivers lap
  • Drivers with a navigation device must ensure it is an integrated part of the vehicle design or appropriately fixed to the vehicle
